What platform did you play Splinter Cell last time on? yeah! you are right, whatever it was, it’s related to the previous generation of consoles and to be honest, its really disappointing to spend a generation without getting a new entry for Splinter Cell, specially for stealth genre lovers like me, who doesn’t satisfy with the whole industry, unless gets a wide variety of stealth games, each one with its own distinct taste, and for the current gen, I really need a new title of Splinter Cell to completely fulfill my stealth collection and be ready to jump into the next era of gaming industry.
In recent years, it’s become a kind of habit to hear rumors on announcing a new version of Splinter Cell and it has never happened so far, but Yves Guillemot finally broke his silence to tell us why Ubisoft had no plans during past years to develop and release new title from the popular franchise. Guillemot said:
When you create a game, you have to make sure you will come with something that will be different enough from what you did before. Last time we did a Splinter Cell, we had lots of pressure from all the fans saying, ‘Don’t change it; don’t do this; don’t do that.’ So some of the teams were more anxious to work on the brand.
Now there are some things and some people that are now looking at the brand; taking care of the brand. At one point you will see something but I can’t say more than that. Also, because of Assassin’s Creed and all the other brands taking off, people wanted to work on those brands more. So we have to follow what they like to do.
In my opinion, Guillemot is right about what he said on Assassin’s Creed franchise. The current gen was a critical era for AC, as it’s core gameplay changed with the addition of RPG elements, and most of the community liked the new mechanics, so Ubisoft responded to these feedback by completing and improving all the new elements, which led to the release of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey as one of the best titles of the franchise in its whole history. On the other hand, Splinter Cell isn’t that kind of franchise that could be released numerous times, and if the development team wants to make great changes in the game, they should to it in the most accurate way possible.
Although Guillemot didn’t tease anything about the announcement of new Splinter Cell title at E3 2019, this time the chance for revealing it at E3 is higher than ever, as Ubisoft skips AC for this year and it’s a great time to announce Splinter Cell, along with Watch Dogs 3.
