Stadia Vice-President Leaves Google

Google Stadia vice-president and product head John Justice has left Google. The executive leaves after the company announced the closure of all Stadia’s internal development studios.

John Justice joined the Stadia team in early 2019, the executive has not confirmed his departure from Google, but the tech giant provided the following statement to 9to5Google:

We can confirm John is no longer with Google and we wish him well on his next step.

Speaking to The Escapist, John Justice explains Google’s plans to continue developing “more and more in-house games”. Shortly after, Justice’s promises couldn’t be delivered, Stadia closed its first-party development studios following the disappointing release of Journey to Savage Planet on the platform.

Google’s mismanagement of the streaming service was evident following Phil Harrison’s words to employees telling that the platform was going great five days before layoffs began. The executive explained in an official blog post the new strategy for Stadia confirming that the service will continue adding new titles from third parties developers.

Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially. Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games.

Harrison also commented on Jade Raymond’s departure from Stadia where she shortly was the head of Stadia Games and Entertainment.

We greatly appreciate Jade’s contribution to Stadia and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles. We’re committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them.

In recent news, Google announced that over 100 games will be arriving at Stadia in 2021.
