Today during Square Enix’s Star Ocean Program, Square Enix announced that Star: Ocean First Departure R is being released for the PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
The game is based on the original Star Ocean that released on the Super Famicom in 1996. Then later on in 2007, a PSP remake was released in 2007 called Star Ocean First Departure. Now the game is going to be an HD remaster of that PSP port that will be released on the Nintendo Switch and PS4.
As additional information about the game has yet to be released such as a release date, features, and gameplay only artwork of the three protagonists, Roderick Farrence, Millie Chliette, and Dorne Murtough.
It’s also interesting to note that Square Enix frequently ports their series to the current-generation console. In 2017, Star Ocean: The Last Hope was released in 60 FPS at 4K for both Steam and PlayStation 4. Additionally, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time released in May 27 with full HD graphics, trophies, and full remote play capabilities.
As Star Ocean is a popular series out in Japan and the West, it’s interesting to see if the game will have full English support. As there still remains to be information regarding the game’s release and features, the news did get announced on Star Ocean’s Twitter, meaning that the games definitely have a chance for an English release.
As Square Enix tells players to stay tuned for more information, it’s likely that they will show off more on Square Enix’s Japanese channel as they announced it on their stream there. Additionally, the Star Ocean Twitter might have some announcements in the future.
While a remaster of the first game in the series will be refreshing to some, there has been no news for a sequel. Maybe in the future, Square Enix will provide.
