According to Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier, Aspyr Media is producing a remake for Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. KOTOR, is a critically acclaimed game developed by BioWare back in 2003.
“This is public at this point; I mean, I’ve basically confirmed that Aspyr–which is the company that has ported a bunch of KOTOR games–is working on [the remake],” Schreier said on the MinnMaxShow.
Eurogamer can also confirm that Aspyr Media is working to add “certain things into the current Star Wars canon”. Eurogamer explains that Disney wants the KOTOR remake to be created as a reimagination in accordance with Disney’s version of the Star Wars canon.
Aspyr Media has always been related to the Star Wars franchise. The studio was established in 1996 and ever since they’ve ported several games to different platforms. From the original KOTOR, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords, Star Wars Racer, to more recent games like Star Wars Republic Commando, Borderlands 2, Civilization VI Gathering Storm.
Jason Schreier also hinted a few months ago that Aspyr Media had over 20 former BioWare employees, most of them left BioWare back in 2019 which is an interesting timing perhaps in preparations for the KOTOR Remake.
Aspyr Media, a game development studio based in Austin, Texas, was recently acquired by Saber Interactive, a subsidiary of Embracer Group. The team of 140 developers will continue to work under the direction of its founders, Michael Rogers and Ted Staloch. The studio who is known for a solid partnership with 2K Games and Lucas Film Games generated $40.6 million in revenue in 2020.
Aspyr Media is reportedly working with a $70 million budget for an unannounced project. It’s possible that the large budget is allocated to the KOTOR remake.
