After an embarrassing unintentional leak on the Xbox website, the unannounced Star Wars: Squadrons was quickly caught by the eager fans of the franchise. Xbox tried to contain the information by taking down the link to the game, but Electronic Arts, publisher of the game decided to confirm what fans wanted to hear. Star Wars: Squadrons is a game in development, the first trailer and some details will be unveiled next Monday, June 15.
Not much is known about Squadrons, but the imagery features an unknown Rebel pilot and an Imperial TIE Fighter pilot. Standing back-to-back, they are swarmed by various starfighters, including X-Wing, A-Wing, TIE Fighter, and TIE Bomber. It’s safe to say there will be some virtual piloting involved in this title.
Squadrons marks the first official Star Wars game to follow Jedi: Fallen Order, which told of the RPG journeys of Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan), a former Jedi Knight who survived Emperor Palpatine’s infamous Order 66.
Fans are keeping an eye on Electronic Arts and its management of the Star Wars franchise, the large publisher and developer retains exclusive rights to develop games for a niche but hardcore market. In the recent years, the publisher has cancelled four projects, which led fans to assume that they do not know what to make out of Star Wars.
EA has cancelled another Star Wars project, the game was being developed by EA Vancouver and Criterion and was a spin-off to the Battlefront series codenamed Viking.
Electronic Arts has confirmed Variety their commitment towards the Star Wars franchise:
“There’s been speculation overnight about one of our ‘Star Wars’ projects,” EA said. “As a natural part of the creative process, the great work by our team in Vancouver continues and will evolve into future ‘Star Wars’ content and games. We’re fully committed to making more ‘Star Wars’ games, we’re very excited about ‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’ from Respawn, and we’ll share more about our new projects when the time is right.”
In defense of Electronic Arts, 2020 has seen some uplifting news, like Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge and Star Wars: Project Maverick
