According to latest rumors, Nintendo is planning to release an upgraded version of the Nintendo Switch. If rumors are accurate, the Switch Pro would use Nvidia Volta architecture. Nintendo’s goal is to make the system cheaper, 4K resolutions would not be available, but the new architecture would largely benefit battery life.
The Nintendo Switch’s current design is based on Nvidia’s Tegra X1 architecture, Nintendo by using a chipset based on Tegra’s line, make the development of the console easier for programmers.
It’s also worth mentioning that, Nvidia’s Volta architecture is not design for gaming performance. The Volta architecture is a very expensive one, clearly wouldn’t be the best architecture if power efficiency, affordability are the objectives in a super small handheld device. Nvidia’s own description of the architecture further explain what is its purpose.
Considered all this, rumors appear to be coming from a reliable source, and claims that Nvidia are working with Nintendo to create the new custom processor.
If this rumors were to be true, Nintendo would have three different systems, a handheld that might not some game due to its limitations, the original Switch and a Switch Pro, that would go against what Nintendo has been doing in throughout its history, can confuse it’s user base and make life difficult for developers.
