Tencent and NVIDIA Making Game Streaming Service

Tencent

is teaming up with NVIDIA to create their own gaming streaming service specifically for China called START. With companies like Google, Microsoft, and Sony all working on their own streaming services, it makes sense for other companies to hop on the bandwagon. NVIDIA got involved because the Tencent wants to utilize their GPU tech to power the service.

Both companies are happy about the partnership and had nothing but good things to say about each other. Senior vice president of Tencent, Steven Ma, had this to say about NVIDIA:

“NVIDIA’s leadership in building the world’s most powerful GPUs paired with their experience in cloud solutions will empower us to scale our START platform to millions of gamers. Today marks a new opportunity for our companies to further push the frontiers of gaming.”

While the senior vice president of Gaming at NVIDIA, Jeff Fisher, said this about Tencent:

“As one of the leading global platforms for game development, publishing and operations, Tencent Games is set to deliver amazing cloud gaming. Combining the Tencent platform with NVIDIA’s GPU technology will provide a world-class experience for gamers everywhere.”

The goal of this partnership is to bring high quality games to people who only own low-powered devices. NVIDIA is also helping out Tencent here because they have some experience in cloud gaming due to their involvement in running GeForce Now and collaborating with Softbank and LG Uplus.

Their partnership is going to extend past the creating of START, however. They also have plans to work on a joint innovation lab for gaming, which will help them “explore new applications for AI in games, game engine optimizations and new lighting techniques including ray tracing and light baking.”

The outlook of this partnership looks bright for people looking for a way to stream games on the go and for the future of gaming in general. It’ll be interesting to see where things go for these two companies in the coming year.
