In a recent GamesIndustry report, Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games stated that Nintendo’s next console is predicted to have a launch price of $400 making it more expensive than the Nintendo Switch, and that “the next system is also likely to be an iteration rather than a revolution.” He also stated that there’s “a high chance” that games on the next-gen console will adopt the new $70 pricing model for its games, especially exclusives. Lastly, Toto also stated that “a Pro model for the Switch actually did exist and certain developers were already working with the dev kit.”
According to several anonymous sources from VGC and Eurogamer, who have “knowledge of Nintendo’s next-gen console”, Nintendo’s next console will launch in the second half of 2024, and the console’s development kits have already been handed out to several partner studios. Additionally, some sources claimed that like the Nintendo Switch, the console will have a portable mode, and it will launch with an LCD screen as opposed to an OLED screen, to reduce costs and required storage for games. The console will also run physical games via a cartridge slot similar to the Nintendo Switch. Details about the console’s backwards compatibility have yet to be revealed. None of these claims have officially been confirmed by Nintendo.
A relevant snippet of the interview via GamesIndustry:
“The time is finally here for a Switch successor, even though I can say a ‘Pro’ model actually did exist and certain developers were already working with the dev kit. I believe the next hardware will drop [in 2024] for $400. There is a high chance that games will cost more, too: $70.”
The next system is also likely to be an iteration rather than a revolution. Nintendo might add some bells and whistles to the device, but it will be similar to the current Switch.
And because there is Pokémon, and Pokémon is associated with handheld gaming, there is no way on earth Nintendo will drop the portability feature for their next big thing.”
