The Promising Future of Bethesda on Xbox

The massive leak that surfaced upcoming Xbox consoles also provided a sneak peek into the future of Bethesda on Xbox. The results of Xbox’s acquisition of Bethesda/ZeniMax have been somewhat uncertain, but the outlook is increasingly promising, thanks to the return of some beloved and critically acclaimed games, along with anticipated entries in fan-favorite franchises.

This significant leak stemmed from documents exposed during the FTC v. Microsoft case. Alongside divulging details about several Bethesda games, it also sheds light on a mid-generation console refresh and provides insights into the next generation of Xbox. It’s vital to remember that plans can evolve, and Microsoft may opt for a different trajectory. Nonetheless, this leak foreshadows a promising future. If all these Bethesda games materialize, Xbox’s exclusive game lineup will be on a robust footing.

Historically, Xbox has grappled with a dearth of exclusive titles, even after acquiring Bethesda/ZeniMax. The vision was there, but the execution left much to be desired, especially when Redfall, the highly-anticipated Arkane game, launched to a chorus of underwhelming reviews. However, the tide is turning. Starfield, the RPG crafted by the creators of Fallout and Skyrim, is a massive success, amassing 10 million players in under three weeks. Furthermore, the game is a testament to Bethesda’s most refined and polished work. With Starfield setting the stage and several promising games down the pipeline, Bethesda’s future with Xbox looks brighter than ever. Now, let’s delve into the specific leaked games.

First on the list is Ghostwire Tokyo 2. It may not be the most anticipated game on the roster, but it holds potential. While the first installment garnered modest praise for its meticulous recreation of Tokyo and fell short in its “hand magic” gameplay mechanic, it possesses the essential elements for an exceptional sequel. With a sturdy foundation rooted in its captivating environments and a combat system ripe for improvement, Ghostwire Tokyo 2 could be a massive success.

The next leak pertains to Dishonored 3. After the disappointment of Redfall, where Arkane diverged from its simulation roots toward a more co-op action-oriented direction, Dishonored 3 is the ideal remedy. Dishonored excelled in supernatural powers and their versatile application in combat, offering players the freedom to approach situations according to their preferred playstyle—be it stealthy, non-lethal, or all-out mayhem. As one of the premier stealth franchises in the market, a new Dishonored entry could prove a valuable asset for Xbox, particularly if it’s included in Game Pass.

Arguably the most thrilling leak involves the remasters of Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Fallout 3 boasts one of the series’ most iconic settings, Washington, D.C., as it grapples with a melancholic and humorous tone. A tone that sends a tingle of nostalgia down the spine of gamers in their late twenties. However, its outdated and clunky gunplay can deter returning players. An upgrade to visuals and gameplay, coupled with inclusion in Game Pass, would be a significant win for Fallout fans.

Perhaps, it would come bundled with all the expansions, which are almost essential for the full experience. A similar sentiment applies to Oblivion. Many Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim players may not have experienced Oblivion, which is a shame. The famous open-world RPG is praised for its deep roleplaying that exceeds even the most recent Bethesda games.  A Game Pass remaster is the ideal gateway, making it easier for fans to revisit this gem and discover one of Bethesda’s finest titles.

The crowning jewel, a game we were already aware of, is The Elder Scrolls VI, likely to debut in 2026, preceding the end of this console generation and sidestepping the PlayStation 5. This news may disappoint PlayStation players, but it undeniably stands as Xbox’s most potent ace up its sleeve. Skyrim was one of the most formative games in the industry, reaching gaming enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. Xbox’s control over such a game gives them tantalizing power, especially when you consider that The Elder Scrolls VI will be even bigger and more far-reaching than its predecessor. With these leaked Bethesda titles and The Elder Scrolls VI looming on the horizon, Xbox will provide the most and, hopefully, the best quality exclusives in its history.

It’s been a long time coming. For years, we’ve been promised Xbox games, but it often felt like an unfulfilled dream. However, with titles like Starfield and even Hi-Fi Rush, we are witnessing the early tremors of an imminent gaming eruption. Not to mention the games not in the leak. Xbox has several other studios under its wing, such as Activision, and other promising franchises. We have Fable and Senua’s Saga Hellblade 2. Currently, however, Bethesda/ZeniMax are the backbone of Xbox games. With their help, Xbox is becoming a force to be reckoned with when it comes to exclusives, and it’s exciting to see that promise become a reality.
