Tim Sweeney Says Epic Games Store Giveaways Help Developers

Tim Sweeney claims that games featured in the Epic Games Store’s free Thursday offers are reporting better sales, the Epic Games founder and CEO explains that giving players the opportunity to try the game has inspired others, presumably their friends, to buy the game. Sweeney does not mention who are the benefited games or publishers.

Tim Sweeney, Kim Librery and Tamoor Hussain from the Unreal Engine 5 took part in the Play For All, GameSpot’s celebration of gaming.

“You’re not going to go out and buy if you’re not into games like Satisfactory, you’re not going to go out and spend money to buy Satisfactory but if you get it for free you realize it’s an awesome game,” Sweeney explains in the interview, which you can watch above.

“People have discovered a lot of great games that way. It’s been a benefit for game developers. Most developers who launch their games for free on the store found that their sales on Steam and on console platforms actually increased after they went free on Epic because of increased awareness and so it’s been a really positive thing and it’s brought tens of millions of new users into the Epic Games ecosystem and that’s been a wonderful thing for the company.”

May was very important year for Epic Games Store, the digital distribution platform managed to offer for free Grand Theft Auto V, Civilization VI and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. Epic Games has been consistently offering from one to two games each Thursday since its launch. The game launcher had a polemic first months due to its timed exclusive titles deals with developers.

The Epic Games Store has confirmed generating more than 680 million dollars (USD) in revenue, and according to Epic Games, has more than 108 million subscribers.
