Stadia Games and Entertainment is further increasing its first-party development team with the acquisition of Typhoon Studios — the independent developers behind Journey to the Savage Planet.
Typhoon Studios is led by co-founders Reid Schneider and Alex Hutchinson (known for being the director of Far Cry 4 under Ubisoft), and consists primarily of former developers from Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and WB Games Montreal. The company’s debut title—Journey to the Savage Planet—was revealed at The Game Awards 2018. The studio will continue working on Journey to the Savage Planet under Stadia Games and Entertainment.
The game is played from a first-person perspective and focuses on a vibrant world full of alien creatures, and players take on the role of “an employee of kindred aerospace” and “catalog alien flora and fauna and determine if this planet is fit for human habitation.”
Journey to the Savage Planet is scheduled to release for current-generation consoles on January 28, 2020 and is to be published by 505 Games.
Typhoon Studios will also work with Stadia Games and Entertainment on developing additional content for the Stadia platform after the release of the company’s first title.
Google Stadia had a rocky launch with the lack of first-party content and the overall quality of its streaming service, with consumers criticizing the console’s high latency and overall lack of content. However, since the system’s debut, Google has made attempts to remedy its shortcomings by adding more games to its library, such as Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint and NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat 11.
The console’s pricing model for its games was also a subject of criticism, being compared to competitors’ subscription services, such as Xbox Game Pass, with a less impressive repertoire.
Stadia Games and Entertainment is on a mission to improve its first-party competition for the platform, as all the Stadia’s games are currently third-party and offer little appeal to veteran gamers in the console market.
