Ubisoft Addresses Japanese Community Regarding Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Ubisoft has released a statement to the “Japanese community” on the official Assassin’s Creed Twitter account addressing several concerns about the series’ upcoming installment Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The message addresses some issues it had with its promotional material in the past and the depiction of Yasuke, the black samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga. The publisher claims that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is historical fiction based on feudal Japan, and apologizes for the mistakes made in its promotional material. It also acknowledges that Yasuke being depicted as a samurai in the game is a point of debate.

“Our intention has never been to present any of our Assassin’s Creed games, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as factual representations of history or historical characters.” It said. “Instead, we aim to spark curiosity and encourage players to explore and learn more about the historical setting we get inspired by.” “Some elements in our promotional materials have caused concern within the Japanese community. For this, we sincerely apologize.” “While we have been consulting with many people throughout the development process, they are in no way responsible for the decisions taken by the creative teams in the interest of gameplay and entertainment.” Ever since its official reveal, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has seen some backlash with some fans as they believe the title is historically inaccurate due to the presence of Yasuke, one of the main leads of the game, being a black samurai.  Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch on November 15 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you “become a lethal shinobi Assassin and a powerful legendary samurai as you explore a beautiful open world in a time of chaos. Switch seamlessly between two unlikely allies as you discover their common destiny.”

The game’s details:
