Ubisoft Announced an Open-World Star Wars Game

Ubisoft and LucasFilms Games announced a collaboration to produce a new open-world Star Wars game.

The new game is being produced by Ubisoft Massive, the project will be built using the Snowdrop engine. Julian Gerighty, Director of The Division 2 will be the game’s Creative Director.

As reported by Wired, Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot affirmed that the project will be innovative and the features of it will be a first for the franchise.

“The Star Wars galaxy is an amazing source of motivation for our teams to innovate and push the boundaries of our medium. Building new worlds, characters and stories that will become lasting parts of the Star Wars lore is an incredible opportunity for us, and we are excited to have our Ubisoft Massive studio working closely with Lucasfilm Games to create an original Star Wars adventure that is different from anything that has been done before.”

After several disappointments, EA’s exclusivity with the Star Wars franchise has ended, the new project is the first game in the franchise to not be developed by EA in a decade.

Back in 2013, EA confirmed to had an exclusive deal with Disney to create Star Wars games, however, the number of games produced by EA can be counted with one hand. Disney President of Global Games Sean Shoptaw told Wired: “EA has been and will continue to be a very strategic and important partner for us now and going forward, but we did feel like there’s room for others.”

This announcement follows yesterday’s announcement of a new Indiana Jones game being developed by Bethesda with a partnership with LucasFilm Games.

President of LucasFilm, Kathleen Kennedy said: “As we look to the next 50 years of Lucasfilm, we look forward to continuing the wonderful legacy in games, which has introduced so many memorable characters and stories. These new collaborations will allow the Lucasfilm Games team to pursue fresh and exciting directions in the storytelling of Star Wars and Indiana Jones in imaginative and different ways than those explored by our films.”
