In a recent interview with Video Game Chronicle, Platinum Games studio head Atsushi Inaba reveals some rather intriguing information regarding the future of the studio, along with an exciting tease of a currently unannounced title.
While Platinum Games is currently noted for working on announced titles such as Nintendo’s Bayonetta 3 and Astral Chain, the studio seems rather excited about their other in-development titles – as well as the remainder of 2019.
“2019 will be an incredibly important year for us(…)Without speaking directly to the number of titles we may or may not announce, I can say it’s going to be a year of some major new approaches, new challenges and new methods for us.” – Atsushi Ianaba via Video Game Chronicle
And on the topic of their new unannounced IP, “Right now we’re in the middle of designing something that has never been done before. I know a lot of people say that, but the game we’re working on truly is unlike anything else(…)Even for our varied history of veteran game developers, this is something that has never been designed before. So from a game design perspective, we’re very excited right now.”
Inaba also touched on their current position on becoming their own publisher and the freedom that it presents. He noted that working with outside parties on IP makes things difficult when wanting to expand and create sequels, stressing “there are cases where you want to do a sequel but if you don’t own the IP, you can’t do it.”
“That’s a pain. That’s a hassle. For us as creators, we want to get to the point where self-publishing allows us to own our IP and do what we want with it, including making sequels. So the faster we can have that freedom, the better if will be for all the creators here.” – Atsushi Inaba
He then goes on to confirm that there may still be times when they partner up with big publishers in order to work on larger IP, but the turn of taking Platinum Games to the next level and publish their owned IP is something that seems like a primary focus for the studio.
Platinum Games’ next big release is Astral Chain which is slated for August 30, 2019 exclusively for the Switch. Bayonetta 3 is also on the Switch’s radar, but has yet to disclose an official release window.
