Gabe Newell, President, and founder of Valve have confirmed that his company is working on new projects, one of which is a new single-player game to be announced.
The statement was revealed during an interview with 1 News, where Newell also discussed the interest to move the company to New Zealand, hosting tournaments for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and DOTA 2, and the polemic surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077.
During the interview, Newell was asked about the plans of doing sequels for Portal and Half-Life, to which he said: “I’ve successfully not spoken about those things for a long time and I hope to continue to not talk about them until they are moot questions,” …“The nice thing is, by not answering those questions, I avoid the community coming up with new, equally-difficult-to-answer questions.”
He was also asked by the rumored “Citadel” project at Valve, but he admitted to not know what was the rumor about.
“We have a bunch of code names — are you referring to a code name?” he said. “I don’t know what ‘Citadel’ is — what is Citadel? “Just to be clear — internally we have a bunch of different names and they change over time.”
Even if he avoided giving more details, Newell could confirm that new games are in development, at least one of them is a single-player game thanks to the “momentum” created by Half-Life: Alyx.
“We definitely have games in development that we’re going to be announcing – it’s fun to ship games.
[…] Alyx was great – to be back doing single-player games, that created a lot of momentum inside of the company to do more of that.”
Newell also backed CD Projekt Red on its complicated situation following the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, he affirms that it’s “unfair to throw stones at any other developer because just getting something as complex and ambitious as that out the door is pretty amazing.”
CD Projekt Red’s managed to sell over 13 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077, the official number of units sold on old-gen consoles is still undisclosed, but the performances issues, bugs forced Sony to remove the game from the PlayStation Store. Investors lost $1 billion USD and the company is facing two lawsuits from investors who are alleging that Marcin Iwinski misled everyone about the current state of the game.
