Vampyr ‘The Darkness Within’ Story Trailer
Vampyr is Dontnod’s incoming action-RPG about physician-turned-vampire Jonathan Reid who’s set to work in the Spanish flu-ridden streets of Victorian London. Healing open wounds while harbouring a thirst for blood presents quite the moral quandary—which sets the stage for a pretty interesting videogame conceit. We’ve seen a fair bit of in-game mechanics so far, however the latest story short focuses on its cinematics.
Watch today’s trailer to hear whispers in the night from Vampyr’s many citizens – each with their own names, back stories, and daily lives. When Vampyr releases in 2017 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, it will be you who decides whether to shrug off his ghoulish reputation, or lay waste to London’s already troubled streets.
In Vampyr, every citizen killed will affect London’s safety. From shop closures to missing kin, the act of killing is unavoidable, but who you kill, and how, is in your hands. Every civilian can be killed, or saved – but as hordes of vampire hunters prowl the streets, growing strong on the blood of the weak will be ever more tempting.

“You can avoid killing innocent humans, but such a choice will also make your character a lot weaker than he would otherwise be since killing is by far the fastest way to level up in the game. Anyone in the game can be killed or spared, which puts player agency at the very center of Vampyr. According to Dontnod, this will dynamically change your relationship with certain NPCs and indeed, the whole story.
Powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, Vampyr looks great already. The combat system also seems responsive and it will include a host of supernatural powers fueled by blood; having these will be quite important when Reid faces veteran vampire hunters and other supernatural creatures. According to the studio, the game will feature a “semi” open world environment with the ability to freely explore zones, while longevity is estimated at fifteen hours for the main quest and another fifteen for the secondary quests.”
