Virtua Fighter X Esports Announced

During the recent Tokyo Game Show, SEGA announced a new project called Virtua Fighters X Esports, the newest entry in the fighting franchise since 2008. According to SEGA’s Japanese website, Virtua Fighter X Esports “will be restarted as an esports title to commemorate the 60th anniversary of SEGA’s establishment.”

SEGA announced the game via a teaser trailer, the developer did not reveal many details, but according to reports, the franchise got its trademark renewed in 2018, something that it may suggest an early development ahead of next-gen consoles.

Check the announcement trailer down below:

“Virtua Fighter x Esports project” announced! Virtua Fighter, which was born as the world’s first 3D fighting game in 1993, will be restarted in Japan to commemorate the 60th anniversary of SEGA’s founding. Stay tuned for future updates!

Is important to mention that it’s not confirmed that a new Virtual Fighter game is in development, the vague announcement from SEGA could also be intended to tease remasters or ports of older titles to newer devices. What the Japanese developer made clear is its intention to produce the game for the esports community.

As reported by wccftech, Virtual Fighter creator Yu Suzuki admitted he might be doing something with Virtual Fighter in a 2019 interview with Video Games Chronicle.

Yes I would like to [return to Virtua Fighter and Out Run]. If you’re going to ask me what, I can’t answer that! There might be something [happening]. But since the IP you mentioned are owned by Sega, I would need to work with them. I am a special consultant with Sega, but we will need to talk.
