, the development studio behind Underworld Ascendant, has announced that veteran game designer Warren Spector will now be working at this studio. The company stated that Spector will be assuming a creative role in Underworld Ascendant. It is great news to see him returning to some of his older colleagues from his days at Looking Glass Studios because it leads to even bigger news. Otherside also revealed that Spector will begin work on System Shock 3, helping to speed up development on it, while Underworld is finished. This is a big deal because he was one of the key developers behind the first title in the System Shock franchise.
“I’ve loved working with students as Director of the Denius-Sams Gaming Academy in the University of Texas’ Moody College of Communication. But when the opportunity to have a bigger role in bringing Underworld Ascendant to life, as well as playing in the System Shock universe once again, helping to bring these games to a 21st century audience, I just couldn’t say no. Working on System Shock was one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done in my career and it’s hard to describe how much I’m looking forward to sharing with players what SHODAN has been up to since the last game was released.”
Warren Spector essentially started his game development career at Origin and had a hand in creating several storied video game series. The first Ultima Underworld, Wing Commander and System Shock games have his fingerprints all over them. He worked on Thief: The Dark Project and eventually made Deus Ex, one of the most influential games of all time. With his experience and design sensibilities behind System Shock 3, this could bode well for the project.
