Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap Announced for Consoles & PC

Dotemu and developer Lizardcube have officially revealed their Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap revival.

Both French studios are collaborating on the effort, with creator of the original Wonder Boy series Ryuichi Nishizawa also cooperating with the project. Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap follows a lonesome adventurer cursed into a half-human, half-lizard form by the Meka-Dragon. As he searches for a cure, the adventurer comes across a variety of traps and dragons — all of which he must overcome using his shapeshifting ability as he is able to transform into a lizard, mouse, piranha, lion, and a hawk.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap was originally released for the Sega Master System in 1989, and became a cult classic on the platform. The new version will remain true to the original episode while adding graphical improvements, enhanced sound, and brand-new features.

Here’s a synopsis for the game:

Cursed into a half-human, half-lizard monstrosity by the Meka-Dragon, a lonesome adventurer is facing the challenge of a lifetime! In search for a cure, our mutated anti-hero will explore the many traps of Monster Land… and defeat many stuff-throwing, curse-wielding dragons.

How many more transformations can one hopeful body survive as it turns into a Lizard, a Mouse, a Piranha, a Lion, and a Hawk… The six different forms of our shape-shifting hero make up the cast of this non-stop action-adventure platformer!

Check out the Trailer:

“While Sega and original developer Westone isn’t involved in the remake, Lizardcube said that it’s working closely with the Wonder Boy series’ creators on the project. The French studio’s take on The Dragon’s Trap features a decidedly different look from its 27-year-old predecessor, as seen in the teaser above. The graphics are hand-drawn, and the soundtrack has also been reimagined, the developer said.”
