WWE Hall of Famer and Lucha Libre legend Rey Mysterio is set to headline the next entry in the WWE video game franchise, WWE 2k22, as the featured wrestler appearing on the cover of the game. this news was announced during a virtual press conference that featured Mysterio and was hosted by WWE color commentator Byron Saxton and broadcast journalist Sam Roberts. During this event, it was also announced that the game will release on March 11, 2022.
Along with appearing on the Cover, Mysterio is also set to have his career highlighted through the showcase mode featured in the game, complete with documentary-style intros that help set up the context for each map featured. During the virtual press event Mysterio stated:
This is an incredible moment for me. To be able to represent the culture of Lucha Libre as the cover superstar of WWE 2K22, it’s a moment of great pride, not just for me, but for the generations that come after me and for all my people – for all of the Latinos, this is a great moment.
Rey Mysterio has had an illustrious career that has spanned over 3 decades and should make for some great material for showcase mode. In particular, he has stated that matches he is most excited to be showcased include his match against Eddie Guerrero at Wrestlemania 21, as well as his match against Shawn Michaels on Smackdown November 14, 2005.
WWE 2k22 will be the first game in the series since 2019s WWE 2k20 was released to extremely poor reception. This caused the franchise to be held back so that the proper fixes could be made. Among the overhauled features of this upcoming game are a redesigned gameplay engine, a new control scheme, and upgraded visuals. It will also feature a new MyGM mode, allowing players to take the role of a general manager and draft their dream WWE roster. In addition, MyRISE will serve as the career mode this time around, allowing players to take the role of a wrestler rising to superstardom.
