Xbox Controller Update Adds Bluetooth LE To Older Models

Xbox is releasing a firmware update for older controllers to members of their Insiders program. The biggest thing that this update is bringing with it will be the addition of Bluetooth Low Energy for its older models of controllers. This will make it easier for the controllers to switch between Xbox consoles to the many devices that support them, such as Windows 10, iOS 15, and Android devices.

The company announced they are rolling out this feature through a post on Xbox Wire. In addition to the Bluetooth LE older models of controllers will also be getting DLI or Dynamic Latency Input, which will help to reduce console input latency on these models.

Most of Microsoft‘s existing models of controllers, including the latest low latency models for the Xbox Series X, use Bluetooth functionality to connect between the multiple devices you might use them on. With this new firmware older controllers will be able to remember your phone, tablet, or laptop and let you quickly switch over to them from your console. To do so you need simply double-tap the pair button.

The DLI feature is designed to cut down latency of any older model that is paired with the Latest Xbox Series X|S console. This firmware should mean that older controllers will now be able to react just as quickly as the latest model of controllers that ship with the console.

These updates are in line with the companies attempt to create a large network of devices where users can enjoy their favorite games. The Xbox Team wrote:

We believe it’s important to maintain backward compatibility with Xbox accessories people already have in their collection and to ensure we deliver the best gaming experience no matter how you choose to play.

Microsoft is currently in the testing phase of these features using Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha Xbox Insiders. they should be getting rolled out to the larger audience on Xbox in the coming months.
