Head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty, had an interview with GamesRadar+ in which he discusses the desire to “deliver a game every three to four months” starting in 2020.
Addressing the concern many Xbox fans had regarding the lack of first-party games from the Microsoft division, Matt Booty explained: “We feel really good heading into 2020. We’ve got a goal of being able to deliver a game, roughly, every three to four months. We have a little bit of work to do to get there. It’ll be lumpy, but we’re closer than we were. And so we feel really good going into 2020 – and the run-up to Project Scarlett – with our content line-up.”
Moreover, Matt Booty elaborated on the studios’ renewed commitment to producing games for Xbox, whether those titles are first-party or third-party. “…content comes under Xbox through three avenues,” he said. “So there is Xbox Game Studios; that’s our first-party. There’s our third party, and we have got a tremendous volume of content coming in through third-party partnerships – and that includes things like we announced at X019, with series like Yakuza, Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy coming to Xbox. And then there’s this third avenue of content, which comes in through ID@Xbox… They put up these montage trailers that go on for like 20-minutes.”
Matt Booty went on to discuss the continued support for the Xbox One despite the upcoming launch of Project Scarlett in Holiday 2020, expressing a desire for gamers to feel like they don’t have to make a choice between console generations to play the newest games. In addition, Matt Booty confirmed that fans should assume that first-party titles that release for Xbox One prior to the launch of Project Scarlett will also be playable on the new console. However, he did not wish to confirm or deny that third-party games will have that same compatibility, as he did not wish to speak for the developers of those titles.
With the push Xbox Game Studios has been making with Game Pass, more first-party titles will add a tremendous amount of content to a service that is already becoming much more influential and prominent.
