Microsoft officially revealed Xbox’s Project Scarlett as the Xbox Series X at The Game Awards ceremony on December 12, 2019.
An announcement trailer unveiled the new console, spoken of as the next step in gaming with the ability to support games in up to 4K resolution while maintaining 60-120 frames per second.
A blog post by Xbox head Phil Spencer laid out more details about the console, most of which confirm much of the speculation and rumors that have populated the internet in recent months. The most powerful Xbox console ever, the Xbox Series X has four times the processing power of the Xbox One X, with a new quiet and efficient tower design that can stand vertically or be lain horizontally—whatever one desires.
Arriving along with the console is a new Xbox wireless controller that shares some features from the Elite series, including its unique directional pad. The new controller is compatible with Windows 10 PCs and is included with the purchase of the Xbox Series X.
In Spencer’s blog post, he revealed more details regarding the Xbox Series X’s specifications:
“From a technical standpoint, this will manifest as world-class visuals in 4K at 60FPS, with possibility of up to 120FPS, including support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and 8K capability. Powered by our custom-designed processor leveraging the latest Zen 2 and next generation RDNA architecture from our partners at AMD, Xbox Series X will deliver hardware accelerated ray tracing and a new level of performance never before seen in a console.”
In addition, the next-gen console supports Variable Rate Shading, boasts a next-generation SSD to eliminate load times, and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II was revealed as the first game in its opening lineup.
The Xbox Series X launches during the 2020 holiday season, along with long-awaited game titles such as Halo Infinite. The PlayStation 5 console also launches in late 2020, and the Xbox Series X must compete, thus ushering in the new generation of gaming.
