Gran Turismo 7
creator, Kazunori Yamauchi talked with KPMG about the future of the franchise and his ideas for upcoming games.
In the lengthy interview, Yamauchi explains that he intends to continue Gran Turismo going forward, which will be in the same boat as the car culture and automobile industry”, perhaps due to the changing nature of the industry, Yamauchi expressed his intention to create something different.
“I would like to take on the challenge of creating a world where people feel more reality than the real thing, whether this is through Gran Turismo or not.”
Yamauchi explains that the video games industry has aspired to be a “digital twin” to the real world, but his vision is to produce something different.
“In the 1970s, mountain foothills and flat land, very much like the world of Totoro, extended in my hometown Kashiwa City. As I liked to collect insects and climb mountains from when I was a child, I used to spend all day in the forest or played in the river,” Yamauchi recalled.
“However, this is probably not possible in Japan now. In that case, why not create some kind of digital nature and convey the complexity and severeness of the world when we get out into nature and the feeling that things do not work out as one expects. This is what I am fantasizing about.”
Gran Turismo 7 was recently delayed to 2022, Polyphony Digital confirmed that the game will return to the royal purpose of full volumes like Gran Turismo 1-4, and provide the best Gran Turismo experience at present.
Revealed in The Future of Gaming, Gran Turismo 7 will bring classic tracks back, tuning shops, and hopefully a catalog of regular, non-exotic cars to race. The game is expected to be “a combination of the past, present, and future – a complete form of Gran Turismo.”
