Yves Guillemot Talks About The Handling Of Artistic Ideas Of New Projects

Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot recently sat down with IGN to share how the developer handles the freedom of each development team to implement their artistic ideas on to new projects, something that at times it has to be limited with schedules and budget. The CEO told IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey that Ubisoft likes to invest in the time that a developer needs to make an idea a reality.

“It helps our teams to take more risk,” Guillemot said. “Sometimes it’s not a good risk, but at the end of the day, I think what I’ve seen in the long run is that when you have people that are very smart, with a lot of passion, giving them time is the best way to come up with something that will be profitable.”

Guillemot also talked about the controversy surrounding “games-as-a-service” while there are lots of fans who support the rise of this genre of games more old school gamers are not so happy with the idea, and it’s something that’s understandable as big budget games tends to have a huge development time, games like Gran Turismo Sports and Kickstarter success Star Citizen.

“Because we put a lot of time and effort into creating universes, cities, and worlds, what we try to do is give possibilities to stay there for a long time, with lots of different gameplay and the possibility to be with your friends,” Guillemot said on this month’s episode of IGN Unfiltered. “Why do you want to redo everything each year if you can improve and increase the experience in one game? It’s easier for us to improve and increase the number of possibilities that the game can bring rather than starting from scratch.”
